Christ the Power of God 12/18/2014

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.  (1 Corinthians 1:18-25)

Dear CBC Team:

As we approach the end of the year let us prayerfully consider the glorious things that the Lord has accomplished in our midst. We have seen the Lord open up new territories for His word to be preached. He has moved us out of our safety zone to step into new streets and street corners. He has carried us through afflictions both spiritual (such as the seeming fruitlessness of our familiar venues) and physical (miscellaneous thorns and weariness in the flesh). He has drawn men from other churches into our company and we have been blessed by their fellowship and testimony.

But, most importantly, He has caused us to endure. He has empowered and encouraged and motivated us to KEEP GOING. Indeed, we have all grown in our steadfast desire to serve Him and to see the increase of His Glorious kingdom, even as the world has rushed headlong into rebellion and unbelief. He has used these things to sharpen our resolve and quicken our hearts.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (1 Peter 1:3-9 ESV)

FYI

Don't forget! Lest we become complacent from too much hiatus, there are two more Saturday evening outreaches left in 2014. Let's make a strong showing this week and next.

The CBC Elders have requested from all the missionaries (that includes our team!) that they provide "media" for use in the weekly services, Missions Conference, and other places. This is for the purpose of keeping the church body informed about and inspired by the various ministries that CBC supports. As we all know, efforts have been made to shoot video during the past year. There is quite a bit of footage, but most of it has not been edited yet. Additionally, we have been taking still photos routinely. We see most of these posted on the blog. Thanks to Jeremy and Forest for help with the stills and the video. Due to various circumstances, these two guys are not always available. So, if you know of anyone at CBC who would be willing and able to help with shooting stills or video, even on a periodic basis, please contact Steve or Mark to let us know. We have all the equipment to capture picture and sound, we just need people to do the capturing! Thanks!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

The Morning Shift

Recently the landscape of the NoHo Metro Station has been altered. A long berm has been installed and pedestrian traffic has been re-routed. It appears that there are big plans for the facility which may include the construction of a tunnel from the underground train depot directly to the bus terminal on the other side of Lankershim Blvd. During this transitional time we will be looking for new spots to preach from and new strategies for sharing the gospel with busy commuters.

Please stand with us on Wednesday mornings at 6:00 AM at the North Hollywood Metro Station on Lankershim Blvd. it's a great opportunity to share the truth with the thousands of commuters who pass through this area. Although we have been on hiatus, we hope to be back in action soon. Please watch for text announcements on Tuesday evenings. Please always RSVP if you plan to join us on Wednesday mornings.

Waist Girded, Lamps Burning 11/29/2014

Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them. And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.  (Luke 12:35-40 NKJV)

A team of broken vessels, submitted to the calling of our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we hobbled, groaned, and stumbled our way over to the corner of Magnolia and San Fernando, once again. And once more the Lord was glorified in our weakness as we shared the Gospel with the busy shoppers passing by. Jeremy, Mark, Dr. Jack, Elder Bob, Dean, Paul (from the Thai Church in Pasadena), and Steve.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from  the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Peter 1:3-5)

Elder Bob: The head of all human beings, the "Federal" head, was Adam. Adam sinned and fell, and we all have contracted that disease of sin. The Bible says we are born in sin. The Bible says that we have a sin nature and that there is nothing we can do about that. Our propensity is to sin. When we do something and we don't want anyone to know about it, our propensity is to lie. When we see something we want, and we don't have the money to buy it, our propensity is to covet. In fact coveting is the National Pastime! When we want something that God hasn't given us, that is sinful. The Bible tells us that we are slaves to sin. The Bible says that we all will be the slave to something. You're either going to be a slave to sin, or a slave to God. Whatever you are a slave to is what is going to control you. That's not a word that we like to use these days, but really we are bound to that which controls us. The Bible says that our hearts are wicked. We hear a lot of people today say, "Follow your heart." Well, I don't want to follow my heart, because I know what is in my heart sometimes, and to follow my heart wouldn't take me to a very good place. Many people follow their hearts, and that leads to some pretty ugly things. Much better to follow the Bible!

Deacon Mark: (Responding to a drive-by heckler who called out, "Hail, satan!" as he walked quickly away) No! God is not mocked! Come back, young man! Don't run away! I want to talk to you. You're going to stand before Jesus Christ and He died on the cross for you. You are so valuable, so important to Him that He got nailed to a stick and bled, and His body broken, because you are a sinner! Repent of your sins, believe in Him! Call upon His name to be saved! May God bless you young man.

Brother Paul, from the Thai Church in Pasadena, joined us to pass out tracts. Many bibles were taken and several stopped to listen to the proclamation of the Word of God.

Special thanks to our brother Jeremy who, if we were gifted with artistic ability like our brother Dave, would rightly be depicted, in a cartoon, as carrying not only all the equipment we use but indeed the entire team of back-pained, chest-pained, herniated, broken and exhausted men upon his shoulders. (Photos by Jeremy, as well.)

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10)

Special Ministry Opportunity

The CBC Elders have invited all the CBC Evangelism Team members to the Calvary Christmas Concert. Performances are on Friday Dec. 12th at 7 pm, Saturday and Sunday the 13th & 14th at 6 pm. Also, on evenings when you are not attending the concert, the prayer room will be open each night so that people from our team may come and pray for the lost that will be attending the concert.

The Morning Shift  11/26/2014

Please stand with us on Wednesday mornings at 6:00 AM at the North Hollywood Metro Station on Lankershim Blvd. it's a great opportunity to share the truth with the thousands of commuters who pass through this area. Lately, due to health issues, we have not been fulfilling this ministry. Thanks to brothers Paul and Richard for filling in this Wednesday morning.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.  (2 Cor. 4:16-18)

Gathering With Him 11/22/2014

". . he who is not against us is on our side. He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters."  (Luke 9:50, 11:23 NKJV)

The steadfast E.T. (Evangelism Team) was few in number, but eternal in impact tonight. Mark, Dr. Jack, Dean, Richard and Steve carried the banner of salvation onto the streets of Burbank. Our strategy this evening yielded mixed results. Located, for a change, on the Northwest corner of the intersection in front of the Town Center Mall, we used the big amp to cover the whole area.

Deacon Mark started us out strong and we could hear his voice all across the intersection.

Traffic was sometimes very loud, sometimes drowning out the amp. But people were curious, probably wondering what planet we had fallen from, and they were either convicted or irritated by our presence.

Several stopped to encourage us, and one even stopped to take our picture. Our favorite heckler was a man pushing a baby carriage whose response to the gospel consisted of one insightful word repeated over and over: "Blah, blah, blah!" In a classic "drive by" style he did not bother to stop and engage in a rational discussion, but continued on by, leaving us amused and strangely encouraged. "Is that the best argument you've got? Please come back and talk with us!" was the response from the box.

The gospel was proclaimed and several bibles were given out. Some of our regular team members were absent, though with us in spirit. Yet, all went according to the Lord's plan as it is not our numbers, strength or might that accomplishes His will.

What Is The Gospel?

Whoever Believes 11/15/2014

Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.”  (Acts 10:34-43 NKJV)

The Glendale malls have become our new favorite spot for fishing. Hundreds of souls pass by each minute, and there are no competing amplifiers or entertainers. Indeed, at times there is a peculiar hush which pervades the area, allowing for clear, heartfelt proclamation of the gospel message.

Dr. Jack:  "God is good because He is just. We get angry with a God who is going to judge us for the bad things we have done, and we say, 'That's a cruel God who is going to judge me,' No, He's a good God. He judges liars and murderers and thieves. In other words no one will get away with the things they thought they had gotten away with. Before God, you will not get away with those things. However, there is good news . ."

Dean:  We're living on a fallen planet. Right here on this corner this is about as nice as it gets. Most of the world doesn't live like this. We've been given so many blessings here in America. We've been given so much material wealth and fortune that we can live our lives as if we don't need God. We can have a false sense of security because we have a place to sleep at night, and we have food, and we can think, "I don't need God. I can live my own life independent from Him." Please don't do that! If you die without Christ you are lost forever! Jesus said, "What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his eternal soul." Folks, the Bible says 78 times that you need to repent. If you ignore that Holy sacrifice that Jesus provided on the cross then what can you expect? If you don't want to know the holy God in this life, you're not going to be with God in the next life.

Steve was blessed to have the only heckler of the evening who asked, "If God has a path for every person's life then why does He make some people atheists?" (Ed. note: What a great question! Loaded with false presuppositions. If you would like to leave your own answer, click on the comment link at the end of this post.)

Steve: God's desire is for all to come to saving faith through His Son Jesus Christ, and when we rebel against that, then we are outside of His will. Our problem as human beings is that we rebel against this glorious God who created us. That's why we are under the curse of sin and death even to this day. Adam and Eve sinned against Him by disobeying His only commandment. Whether we rebel against Him or deny He exists, it's the same thing; sin.

Mark added: There is no such thing as an atheist. We suppress the truth in unrighteousness.

Unfortunately the heckler left to cross the street. His tone was challenging yet polite. Perhaps the conversation could have continued longer if the man on the box had thought to introduce himself. This is often forgotten in the pressure of the moment, but it helps to reduce excess conflict and prompts the heckler to stick around longer. A heckler is always good for drawing a crowd.

Abide In Me 11/8/2014

I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, then he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.   (John 15:5-11)

The team was blessed to share the gospel from one of our regular spots, across from the entrance to the Town Center Mall.

Brother Vinny got things started in his usual way by boldly calling people to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

Not long after Vinny began to speak, a Burbank policeman stopped by to respond to a "disturbing the peace" complaint. As a concession to the police we agreed to turn down the volume and then we switched to Whitefield (amplification-free) mode as a gesture of our desire to obey the authorities.

Deacon Mark was the first to Whitefield as each speaker took a turn on the box.

Many Bibles were requested, and tracts were distributed.

The Gospel was proclaimed. Glory to God!

Trashing Satan

In recent weeks we have encountered several attempts to intimidate and mock the proclamation of the gospel by people waving the hand sign which commonly refers to the devil, or by shouting some kind of praise for satan. In order to respond to such taunts in a godly way, it makes sense to simply tell the truth about the enemy of our soul, and use that to lead into the gospel. Here is one suggested response:

"Satan is a loser! Read the book! Satan was permanently defeated when Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Satan and the demons are doomed to the lake of fire for all eternity. Those who follow him are his useful idiots. Satan despises human beings because we bear the image of the righteous God whom he despises. That's why he labors to destroy the dignity of man by tempting and deceiving him into all manner of self destructive sins: prostitution, pornography, murder, abortion, racism, etc, etc. And those who are foolish enough to do his dirty work are the ones he abuses the most. But the good news is that God, the real God, so loves the world that He sent . . ."

Glendale Outreach - Saturday Night 11/15/2014

Instead of our usual Burbank outreach we will be witnessing in Glendale at the Central Avenue entrance to the Galleria Mall, across from the Americana. There is a large sidewalk area at the stoplight located midway between Broadway and Colorado. Large groups of shoppers gather at the light waiting to cross back and forth between the two malls. Last month, this was an exciting time of outreach. Many received bibles and families responded to the glorious Gospel.

Please join us on the TOP FLOOR of the parking structure at the South West corner of the Glendale Galleria. This is the end of the mall where Target is located. Nearest corner is Columbus and Colorado. Please meet us there at the usual time, 6:00pm, for prayer and then we will walk to the ministry site described above. See you there!

NOTE:  From the 134 Freeway, exit onto Central, going South from the Freeway. Turn Right at Colorado. Then turn Right again at the entrance to the Galleria. Turn Left into the parking structure and follow the signs to the roof. We will gather at the South East corner of the roof, as outlined in the illustration above. As Don's team was guarding the entrance to the parking lot at the Mission Hills abortion clinic, we noticed this brightly colored finch in the tree immediately above us. He seemed very tame as he was happily perched within easy reach. Many remarks were shared about the beauty and amazing complexity of this tiny creature. And of course, it wouldn't occur to anyone to mercilessly take the life of this precious example of God's creative handiwork. A sad irony was apparent to all, that nearby, in the clinic, even more precious and innocent creatures were being sacrificed without any similar restraint.

Hollywood Halloween 10/31/2014

Moses in Hollywood
Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and said, "I will sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted; the horse and it's rider He has hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; this is my God and I will praise Him; my father's God and I will extol Him. The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is His name. Who is like You among the gods, O Lord? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises, working wonders? You will bring them and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance, the place, O Lord, which You have made for Your dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established. The Lord shall reign for ever and ever." (Exodus 15:1-3,11,17-18 NASB)

This year's intrepid Halloween team included (l to r) Sharon, Sai, Pastor Kosol (Thai Outreach Church, Pasadena), Carol, Nichole, Dean C., Debbie, Dean S., Bruce, and Lisa. Others not in the shot included: Vinny, William, Richard, and Steve. After enjoying a wonderful time of fellowship, great food, and encouraging prayer at Dean's place, the team arrived in Hollywood and dove right into the clamorous throng.

At first the crowds seemed absent and a weird calm caused us to ask, "Where is everybody?" But evidently that was the calm before the storm, as the throngs of zombies, vampires and ghouls staggered into the area.

Brother Vinny: Let me share with you what sin is. Sin is all that is contrary to who a holy God is. Let me tell you what the most terrifying thing about God is. The most terrifying thing about God is that He is holy, good and just. And you're going to ask me, "Well what's so terrifying about that?" What's terrifying about that is that nothing that is unholy, nothing that is unjust, nothing that is not good can enter into the kingdom of a holy God.

Brother Richard: Only God can save you. No false god can save you. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." No one comes to the Father except through Jesus Christ. The Bible says that He made Him to be sin for you, so that you may become the righteousness of God in Him. Jesus Christ took the punishment on your behalf, when He was nailed to that cross. Jesus' death on the cross is a free gift, there is nothing you can do to earn it, but you must respond by repenting of your sins and trusting in Jesus Christ.

Law enforcement kept a non-judgmental eye on the proceedings, although one man was detained for unknown reasons.

What does a person have to do to get noticed, and arrested, by the Hollywood Police on Halloween night?

One of the interesting aspects of the evening was when this fellow took up a position next to the box and began denouncing the most high God and exalting the enemy instead. Appropriately costumed as an average man on the street, (i.e. one who denies God by ignoring His existence), he held a simple sign stating: "Hail satan". Our brother William, from Grace Community Church, was on the box, and he did a very good job of responding to a seemingly well rehearsed attack.

Some of the Heckler's groundless assertions included: "Jesus is dead." "God is a liar." "If Jesus died to take away the sins of mankind then Christians should not sin anymore." "Jesus lied all the time."

He also made the following statements directed at the crowd that was forming: "You guys are okay. You guys are just people. You don't have to worry about anything. These people are trying to tell you that you are a bad person. Christians are violent extortioners. Christians are supposed to follow the word of God, but they don't. Because God is the God of love, but Christians have no love. Jesus is not the messiah. Jesus is not the Son of God. It is blasphemy to the Jews to think so. Jesus released death on the world."

Sound familiar?

Then the Heckler turned to the man on the box and said: "Give me all your money, Christians. Luke Chapter 6 verse 30 ("Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back." NKJV) Jesus says, Give whatever you are asked. So, christians, I ask you, in the name of Jesus, give me ALL of your money.

William: Yes, but God also says, Do not give pearls to swine.

Heckler: The reason why you do not give me all of your money is because you really don't trust God, and you really don't believe the word of your God.

William: Well, man, but what are you doing, are you giving? Obviously not cause you've still got the poor.

Heckler: I am not a Christian, I don't have to do what your God says. Your God says you are to give whenever you are asked. Now I ask you to give me all of your money.

William: My God commands me to love my neighbor. Peter said, "Silver and Gold I do not have, but what I have received I give to you in the name of Christ."

Heckler: The reason why you don't give me all of your money is because you don't trust God to provide for you.

Steve: No the reason why is because we don't trust you.

Heckler: This man is disobeying Jesus because he refuses to give me his money because Jesus tells him to give and he won't give. You don't trust your own book. You love your money more than you love God.

A man from the crowd was angry with the satanist and sought to give him a dollar to stop his mouth.

William: (Seeking to calm the man and maintain control) Hey man, Christ said if they don't receive the word to just wipe the dust off your sandals and kick rocks.

This seemed to calm the man down, as he acknowledged the appropriateness of the reference.

William continued: Jesus said that riches will not profit you in the day of death. Naked we come, naked we go.

At this point the Heckler made statements about the age of Mary (claiming she was 13) when the Christ child was conceived and asserting that God was a "rapist" and "child molester."

Meanwhile, Steve encouraged William to "Give 'em the gospel, brother!"

William ably forged ahead amidst the chaos: This is the gospel! We have sinned against God. We have broken God's law. And even though we have broken God's law, He sent us His Son to pay our debt, so that we could be forgiven of our lawlessness. So people, look, we all need forgiveness. Why? Because we all have offended a holy God.

Heckler: You're already forgiven! You're already okay!

William: If you have faith in Christ you are forgiven, that's true.

Heckler: Jesus is not the Jewish messiah!

William: The bible clearly says that we must run to Christ! And by faith look upon Him who was nailed (to the cross) for your sins.

Heckler: But if Jesus died for Christians' sins then Christians wouldn't sin anymore! But Christians sin all the time, proving that His blood is worthless!

William: He was not just a moral teacher teaching good things. The bible says that Jesus Christ was God in human form dying for human beings because that is the only way we can be reconciled with a holy God, is that if God Himself entered His creation, becomes a creature, and dies for our sins.

Heckler: Jesus is not the Son of God! Jesus is not God! He was a crazy person!

William (continuing): That is the gospel! That God Himself was made flesh. And becoming a human being He bore our sins.

After this, Dean took over the box and proceeded to continue the gospel proclamation, while the heckler gave up and left. Dean's strategy was to talk over the heckler, and this effectively stopped his mouth. William did a heroic job answering the devil with scripture. In the course of the conflict, the crowd heard the gospel numerous times.

Brother Mark reported later that the team in Burbank was fervently praying throughout the evening. No doubt their prayers, by the Spirit, strengthened, and bore fruit in, the saints on Hollywood Boulevard.

Thanks to all who participated in the outreach. As John said in describing our Lord's ministry, if all the witnessing moments of that single evening were cataloged here, "even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written." Amen!
