He is Alive! April 04, 2015

Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. Whether then [it was] I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. Moreover we are even found [to be] false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
(NASB, 1 Corinthians 15:1-18)

Men's Breakfast
Calvary Bible Church
03/28/2015

The month of March at Calvary was focused on growing the body in the area of evangelism through sermons, conferences, and outreaches.

The final
evangelism-specific teaching was done at the Men’s Breakfast, where the team was given the opportunity to speak about what we do as an encouragement to the men to consider joining us.

Each attending member spoke for a minute or two as to the personal reason why they go out on the street to hand out tracts or stand on a box.  It was an opportunity to show the other men not how “spiritual” we are but, quite frankly, how even babbling fools like us can be used to proclaim the gospel!

After we spoke, Jeff Lambin preached for 45 minutes with sensitivity, yet directly on the hard doctrine of the eternality of Hell.

Download the audio from the following link: March 2015 Men's Breakfast

The next men’s breakfast will be with Bobby Scott, April 25, 2015. It is entitled “Devotion to Prayer” as we, as a body, focus on corporate prayer
in April.  The breakfast is $7.00 and starts at 7:30 am upstairs in room 207.

Jerusalem Outreach
Burbank
03/29/2015

In preparation for Passion Week (the week long celebration that starts with Palm Sunday and ends on Resurrection Sunday) Calvary Bible Church held its third “Jerusalem Outreach”.
The Jerusalem Outreach is a laid-back, family-friendly event where people gather together after Sunday service to be divided into small groups, are given maps of the surrounding areas, and sent out to canvass the neighborhood for about an hour. Threefold Purpose of the Jerusalem Outreach
  1. Share the gospel during the outreach as the opportunity arises
  2. Invite people (personal invite and door hangers) to come to specific events at the church where they will hear the gospel
  3. Teach our body to evangelize through example
With members from the evangelism team joining in, as well as pastors, elders, and deacons, it provides an opportunity for those who have had more “street” and one-on-one witnessing experience to come alongside and disciple others who are nervous about sharing their faith with strangers.

Future of this Outreach Going door-to-door can be difficult in a city swarming with Jehovah Witnesses, and while we work hard to distance ourselves from the appearance of self-righteous holiness, it can be easy to understand why people are leery of us and our intention when we approach the door. In light of that challenge, the church is considering other and, perhaps, better ways of reaching out to our neighborhood. For now, however, this outreach has proven to be successful in terms of getting people excited for an opportunity to go out, multiple chances to share the gospel that would otherwise have been missed, and even people coming to the church to hear our Savior proclaimed from the pulpit. The next planned outreach will be in the summer to let people know about the VBS program.

Thursday Outreach
NoHo Train Station
04/02/2015

As it is not a Cavalry-organized outreach, we don’t often write about the Thursday night outreach in this blog.  This week, however, we wanted to mention an encounter Mark had with a “Black Hebrew Israelite”.

Please note that the use of “Black” as a qualifier in the title is how the group often refer to themselves, as well as a defining quality to be a member in this particular sect.  See CARM’s definition for more information: https://carm.org/black-hebrew-israelites

Besides the implicit (yet denied) racism and exclusivity of salvation to those who are within this group (excluding even “white” Israelites), this group is no different than other works-based religions.  They remain under the bondage of sin, striving to fulfill a law which shows sinfulness, but is unable to save, bringing instead death to those who rely on it (Romans 7:7-13, et al).

Seven, as the man in the image identified himself, was full of pride and lies, and his theology and treatment of Mark reflected that. Worse than that, however, was that he was blind to seeing his serious error as he mocked the very notion that one goes to heaven by faith in Christ and His work on the cross.

Please pray for God’s mercy on Seven and all of those trapped by this peculiar deception of race + heritage + works = heaven.

It’s interesting to note that we see similar discriminatory aspects in other religions, as well.  We often talk about the “works” side of false religions, but it's not always just what you do, but who you are that defines either your ability to be saved or the level of salvation you obtain when you die.  Such partiality is the way carnal man thinks, and it shows itself in man-made religion.

This should be a wonderful reminder to us that what stands out about Christianity is not only can we not earn our way into heaven - that it is exclusively the work of Christ on the cross - but that there are no other pre-qualifiers to be able to benefit from this salvation.  No matter the background, lineage, melanin levels in the skin, sin in the past, etc.  None of that matters when you repent of your sins and trust in Christ and His atoning work.

How great our Creator who made us all in His image! See in the book of Revelation His promise to save at least 1 person from every people group:
When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying,“Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.“You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.”
(NASB, Revelation 5:8-10, emphasis added)

About Dean’s “Magnet Evangelism”
Thursday nights are open for those whose churches don’t have an evangelism team, or where going out once a week just isn’t enough!  You are welcome to join us there.  Dean graciously opens his piano store in Burbank for fellowship and prayer at 4, with people arriving at North Hollywood around 5:15 pm.  Some stay for the entire evening (until 8:30 pm), others show up later after getting off work, and still others leave early for other activities.  Come as you can...

A limited supply of tracts are provided, though if you are able to bring some yourselves, that is always helpful.  But don’t let that stop you!

Abortion Clinic
Mission Hills
04/04/2015

This last Saturday, the abortion clinic had a particular evangelistic flare to it.  It’s not that other weeks don’t, but most weeks the focus is on the very short-term issue of a baby about to be murdered.

As most "conversations" last the span of 10 to 15 seconds, with Don pleading with the couple as they walk from their car to the clinic door, not a lot of time is available to expound upon the gospel or our glorious Savior or man’s condition before a holy and just God.  Instead, conversations tend to sound more like:

“Are you here for an abortion today?”
  [response]

“Can we speak to you for a moment?”

  [response (maybe)]

“Sir/Madam, what you are doing is murder in the sight of God.  Please, come talk with us before it's too late!”

The words and intensity may change, but that’s about the length of time it takes for someone to get out of their car, walk across the parking lot, and enter the clinic.  Generally speaking, these few words (and a round of silent prayers praying that this time the couple actually does stop) is an abortion clinic “conversation”.

This week, however, Jeg (we’re not sure the exact spelling) came out (from the clinic, we'd find out later) and approached us with "I don't agree with what you are doing".

Besides being polite, what stood out was he came to us not with the intention of defending abortion, but on challenging the very notion that God exists.  Or if He does exist, how do we know that our God is the right one and not the god of Islam, etc?

In short, and in a surreal sort of way, this was like any other conversation we have in downtown Burbank...except that upstairs, his child was about to be killed.

We spoke with him for about 30 minutes.  While he didn't say he was an Atheist, that would likely be his stated position had we asked.  Really, though, his intellectual arguments were thin, and the more we said who God revealed Himself to be, the more it became clear that he wasn't against the idea of a god, but wanted nothing to do with the God, as He has revealed Himself in the Bible.

We touched many topics while he was there, but at each point, what made him defensive was not when intellectual proofs were set before Him, but truths in the Bible.

As we turned the conversation from a general god to the true God then to the Son of God and the need for Him, it was clear that Jeg saw himself as blameless.  If one does not see their sinfulness, than Jesus' work is meaningless in their ears, so about 20 minutes into the conversation Don steered it to Jeg and his sin - specifically the abortion at hand (up to that point, we weren't even 100% sure that's why he was there).

His excuse was "I'm too old" (43) and "no time for another kid".  He justified his actions by claiming it would be the best option since he could not take care of the kid.  We let him know that there is someone who would adopt the baby (this is true).  Worked into a corner where he was without excuse for his sin and when presented with an alternative to killing his baby, he still insisted on doing that.

Actually, he went even further.  He washed his hands of all responsibility for the murder of his child on the grounds that God, in His sovereignty, had made him that way, so it wasn’t his fault.  He said if God wanted to, he could have stopped the baby from being conceived, or if God wanted to, he could have prevented him from coming to the clinic.  He hadn't, so it was His fault.

That is basically where the conversation ended as he headed back inside.

Father, we thank your for the mercy you extended to Jeg so that he would hear clearly of your wrath, mercy, and love as demonstrated through Christ in His dying for our sins.  We pray that you use our poor words, and even the murder of his child, to bring him to his knees before you in heartfelt repentance, and submission before he dies.  Your mercy is without end, and you alone are able to save him.  Please, Father, we humbly ask that you bring yourself glory through the saving of Jeg.  But, as in all things, we say "not our will, but yours be done."

Saturday Outreach
Burbank
04/04/2015

A beautiful evening had been prepared as we made our way to our normal corner at Magnolia and San Fernando.

Almost right-away, as Mark began proclaiming Christ, a heart-breaking scene unfolded as these kids came up to mock Christ as they showed off for one another.

When Mark asked if they knew who Christ is, the one in the middle (white shirt) said, "I already know all that - I'm a Christian." But when presented with a scenario of "if you died and God asked 'why should I let you into Heaven?', what would you say?" He didn't even have a poor idea what was involved in salvation.  Others in the group joked and boasted that they were going to hell.

However, in spite of this arrogant silliness, Mark spoke truth lovingly and kindly back at them.  After posing for pictures, and just generally laughing off the gospel, they moved on.

It’s times like this you wish you could just say...something that would cause them to see their foolishness.  It can be frustrating if we forget who our God is, and that His Spirit must move for salvation to occur.

One way the Lord seems to work is to use the chaos of a crowd like this to bring people interested in hearing what we are saying. Look at that picture again, behind the giggling kids - notice that what Mark is saying is not going completely unnoticed.

As Mark was asking why the kids would enter heaven, this other onlooker replied (as his answer) "I'm Muslim".

To lay the ground work for a conversation, Mark decided to start with “The Islamic Dilemma”.

A quick summary of the Islamic Dilemma
1) The Quran (and thus Mohammad) says that the Torah and Gospels are the unchangeable words of God.
2) The Quran contradicts the Torah and Gospels.

So either a) the Quran is wrong about the Torah and Gospels being the unchanging word of God, making Mohammad a false prophet,
or b) the Quran is right that the Torah and the Gospels are the unchanging word of God, which makes the Quran wrong because it contradicts that same Torah and Gospel, making Mohammad a false prophet.

See this video for a easy to follow presentation, including verses and surahs

Once Mark had established that the Quran, itself, refers to the Torah and Gospels as the word of God, he was then able to speak with the young man grounded on the authority of the Bible about Jesus, His deity, and His sufficiency for salvation.  The young man's questions were direct, but never arrogant or argumentative as he seemed to be honestly probing the subject.

Before he quietly walked away during an unrelated commotion, he was given a tract we have specifically for Muslims that, again, uses the Quran against itself and Scripture as the authority.

It was a rare encounter, with a genuineness that is uncommon, and we are continuing to pray for him.

Meanwhile, across the street, Andrew had the opportunity to speak with another Muslim.  There was a significant language barrier, and the area of contention was on the oneness of Allah vs. the three-in-one nature of the true God.

Here Andrew points to John 1:1. The man wasn't really interested in discussing the point, and the conversation lasted no more than a minute or two.

In the same picture, sitting down, is an Armenian man.  While Andrew spoke with the Muslim man, the Armenian man read from a Bible that Andrew had given him a few minutes earlier.  After the Muslim man left, the Armenian crossed himself and handed the Bible back to Andrew. Andrew tried explaining that it was a gift, but the man wasn't really all that interested in keeping it.

We're excited to finally have some copies of Armenian Bibles available, but, alas, this type of rejection is a common occurrence.  Armenians often boast in being the first Christians (in 301 AD they adopted Christianity as a state religion), yet at the same time have no interest or knowledge of the contents of the Bible. Instead it is little more than a good luck charm.

We’re blessed to have an Armenian member of the team, but this is a particularly hard group for us to reach as they tend to be willing to only speak with other Armenians when it comes to religion.  Please pray for more laborers in this area.

The rest of the evening included one-on-ones...

Homosexuality and the Supreme Court

This week saw the submission of the brief opposing same-sex marriage to the Supreme Court, which can be downloaded at: United States Justice Foundation

This is in anticipation of the Supreme Court's promise to rule by the end of the current session as to whether or not same-sex marriage should be protected as a right by the Federal Government, overriding state laws, undermining our existing Constitution on religious freedom, and a direct contradiction of God's word.

The last section of the brief (sub-section L of IV), God's Judgement on the Nation, is quoted below:
Should the Court require the States and the People to “ritualize” sodomite behavior [1 Kings 14:24] by government issuance of a state marriage license, it could bring God’s judgment on the Nation. Holy Scripture attests that homosexual behavior and other sexual perversions violate the law of the land, and when the land is “defiled,” the people have been cast out of their homes. See Leviticus 18:22, 24-30. Although some would assert that these rules apply only to the theocracy of ancient Israel, the Apostle Peter rejects that view: “For if God ... turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly.” 2 Peter 2:4-6. The continuing application of this Levitical prohibition is confirmed by the Book of Jude: “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” Jude 7 (emphasis added).
Of course the authors of the brief are not prophets, and one might argue that judgement is already under way, but it's a chilling thought, nonetheless.

One other argument in the brief that is worth mentioning is the anticipated ramifications to preaching (IV, C).  The issue raised was not something at least this author had really considered before.  We expect the loss of a government-protected right in identifying homosexuality as a sin but, as they point out, it's a step worse than that:
...All persons would be prohibited from the free exercise of religion, including “proselytizing”[21] others that their behavior constitutes sin, but that the penalty for their sins has already been paid through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I Cor. 15:1-4.
In other words, we could lose the right not just to say that homosexuality is a sin, but also lose the ability to put forward the truth that Christ has paid the penalty of that sin (for those who repent and trust in Him).

A 2 1/2 hour session for oral arguments is to be held on April 28th, with a final decision by the end of June.

We Shall Always Be With the Lord 3/28/2015

For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will be no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 NKJV)

Saturday Outreach

3/28/2015 Burbank

Perhaps an idol of March Madness, we chose to refer to this object as the "Red Heifer." This statue was standing in front of the patio dining area of the Market City Caffe.

(FYI - Here is a recent article on a red heifer that is the subject of much speculation.)

Dr. Jack was the lead-off man on the box. For a while it was just like old times on the mall. An unusual quiet pervaded the area. That was short-lived, however. Later, the street performers reasserted their dominance of the sonic environment.

Many tracts were distributed. Razmik visited with longtime CBC'er Murlee.

Mark and Steve also took turns on the box. At the end of the evening, Mark was approached by a man who has talked with us before. His name is Christopher. Christopher is very critical of our ministry, and has taken several opportunities to inform us that our ministry is without power because we "are not demonstrating the power of the Holy Spirit." The examples he used to give evidence of his claim were the fact that Mark has a physical infirmity, and that the beat-boxers were drawing a large crowd while we were being ignored.

Here is an excerpt of their conversation:

Christopher: The Lord is wondering where the demonstration is. "I come to you not only in word, but I come to you in power and demonstration." So where is the demonstration? Especially if you are preaching from a place where you are sickly, and you need healing yourself and you're preaching about a God who heals, but He won't heal you. That's a trouble! People want something tangible, right?

Mark: They want a sign. "A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." (Matthew 12:39, 16:4)

Note the slight twisting of the scripture as paraphrased by Christopher. Here are some better understandings of the passage(s):

1 Thessalonians 1:5:

For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.

Ray Comfort's commentary:

God backs up His Word with power. When the unsaved ask for proof, we have it. If any person obeys the command to repent and trust Jesus Christ, he will experience the power of the gospel. God will transform him on the inside by giving him a new heart with new desires. Instead of drinking in iniquity like water, he will begin to thirst after righteousness. He will be born again. God will make him a new creature all of which will give him "much assurance." (Evidence Bible, p. 1717)

John MacArthur's comment:

It had to come in word, and not word only, but in Holy Spirit power and in confidence. The quality of the message was confirmed by the character of the lives of the preachers. Paul's exemplary life served as an open book for all men to read, establishing the credibility of the power and grace of God essential to making the message of redemption believable to sinners. (MSB, NKJV, p. 1843)

1 Corinthians 2:1-4:

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men bit in the power of God.

John MacArthur's comment:

Paul came to Corinth after being beaten and imprisoned in Philippi, run out of Thessalonica and Berea, and scoffed at in Athens, so he may have been physically weak. But in that weakness, he was most powerful. There were no theatrics or techniques to manipulate people's response. His fear and shaking was because of the seriousness of his mission. (MacArthur Study Bible, p. 1731 NKJV)

Ray Comfort's commentary:

Qualifications for evangelism:
1. A witness need not have "excellence of speech or of wisdom." He should simply declare what he has seen and heard.
2. He must not get sidetracked with unnecessary details, but focus on the essentials of Christ's death on the cross.
3. He must have "weakness" (not trusting in his own strength or ability)
4. He must have "fear" (in Greek, phobos, "that which is caused by being scared")
5. He must have "much trembling" (awareness of his insufficiency)
Do you meet these qualifications?  (Evidence Bible, p. 1633)

The Morning Shift - NoHo Station 3/25/2015

Steve was blessed with the opportunity to read the word of God at NoHo Station on Wednesday morning. Genesis 1-3, Isaiah 42, 52-53, Matthew 5-7 were the texts that were shared from the  box. Many came up to receive bibles. Afterward, our brother Arthur, who works for a vendor in the mornings, stopped by to encourage Steve and to share his testimony of the blessings that God has given him, saving him from an upbringing in difficult circumstances, saving him from a gang lifestyle and leading him to a new church with solid biblical teaching. He also expressed his gratitude to our brother Tony Miano whose ministry generously bought Arthur a new bicycle to replace the one that had been stolen from him by thieves. Praise the Lord! We are always blessed to see our brother Arthur.

Please stand with us on Wednesday mornings at 6:00 AM at the North Hollywood Metro Station on Lankershim Blvd. it's a great opportunity to share the truth with the thousands of commuters who pass through this area. Please watch for text announcements on Tuesday evenings. Please always RSVP if you plan to join us on Wednesday mornings.

The Ministry of Reconciliation 3/21/2015

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:17-21 ESV)

Saturday Outreach

3/21/2015 Glendale

It was another great outreach in Glendale. Many Bibles and tracts were given out. In spite of a small team many one-to-ones took place.

This photo has an interesting subtext. The woman on the left with her arm akimbo was sitting with the man on the right who is talking to Sharon. As the picture was being snapped, the woman had gotten up to leave and was looking back at the man with an attitude of impatience. He, however, was interested in what Sharon was explaining (i.e. the Gospel, of course). How many times have we seen a similar scenario play out as one half of a couple is interested in hearing the Gospel, and the other is vehemently against hearing the Gospel.

Due to the presence of a woman playing a guitar in the place where we usually set up, we instead took a position on the other side of the Galleria entrance where we had a great exposure to the passing throng of shoppers.

Jack, Barbara and Mark reported to the team on their visit to the inmates of the women's prison in South Central Los Angeles, earlier in the day. This was a long day for them, but they each expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of that challenging outreach. They also remarked on the similar need that the shoppers had in common with the incarcerated women, that of a Savior who died for their sins. Clearly, though, it was the ones in jail who took the issue far more seriously.

According to Barbara, this young couple, expressed doubts about the truthfulness of the Bible's description of a man who died 2,000 years ago to take away the sins of the world. Rather, they claimed to be followers of a religion described in the pages of the Harry Potter novels.

One note of concern: There were three different musicians performing simultaneously. The Pho cafe, which is directly contiguous to our preaching, had a small band performing. Also, besides the guitarist in our usual spot, there was a woman playing a highly amplified violin across the street. Hopefully, this is not the start of another trend!

As always, the evening was well spent and many received tracts and Bibles.

Yasmine's Crime of Convenience

As previously reported, on March 7th, our brother Don was joined at the Mission Hills Clinic by Tony Miano and several men from the Shepherd's Conference. They came from Oregon, Arizona and Canada, among other locales, to join the effort to stem the tide of murders taking place there. This video is a good example of how to present the case for life to a pregnant woman who is willing to listen. Sadly, in spite of Tony's eloquent and gracious presentation of the truth, it is reported that she decided to go through with the abortion.

Inerrancy of Scripture - March 2015

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; (2 Timothy 3:16)

The Masters Academy International (TMAI) Symposium
Calvary Bible Church
03/02/2015

Our church was blessed with the privilege of hosting a pre-Shepherds-Conference symposium on March 2nd where several well known speakers spoke to hundreds of pastors from around the world about missions in light of the inerrancy of Scripture.  The TMAI Symposium featured Dr. James White and Paul Washer, along with international speakers from locations including Latin America, Africa, and India.

The exact numbers of people attending varies, but between 500 and 700 men (primarily pastors) came, were blessed with fellowship, and were strengthened and exhorted to handle Scripture as the sole authority, the infallible and inerrant Word of God.

Participating in the proclamation of the gospel comes in different forms, and while one way is going out to the streets of Burbank, it would be a mistake to think that an evangelism team like ours is the standard for evangelism and that the end goal of every good Christian is standing on street corners with a loudspeaker or a fistful of tracts.

Everyone, indeed, is called to be involved in the proclamation of the gospel, but our Savior has created each of us with gifts, talents, and resources so that together, His Word goes forth.

The TMAI Symposium was an opportunity to participate in the furthering of the gospel by serving pastors who, in turn, will take what they have learned to their countries and ministries.

How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? (Romans 10:14, 15a NASB)

I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. (Paul to the Philippians in light of their ongoing support of him and his ministry in Philippians 1:3-5 NASB)

Some from our team were blessed to be counted among the participants at this missions focused event.  Praise God for the literal swarm of men and women from both Calvary Bible Church and Grace Community Church who volunteered their time to setup, serve food, carry out trash, and otherwise help.

Our Lord made it a success in so many ways that a short entry like this cannot adequately express thanks to Him.  He granted wisdom to a team of people who had never organized an event like this, held back the rain until everyone had been served lunch and returned inside for the next speaker, gave people a heart to serve so no one was overburdened, safely brought pastors from all around the world, etc.  To be counted as one He used is a most humbling thought, indeed.

All glory to Him, and may He continue to bless the pastors who came and use this for the furthering of His gospel!

The Morning Shift
03/04/2015
NoHo Station

This morning, as our brother Paul was about to step on the box to begin preaching, a woman rolled up on her bike, unburdening her conscience about the loss of custody of her children due to her own drug abuse.

As she continued, she began insisting that Paul could help her by going across the street and mediating on her behalf.

This was not someone that Paul knew personally, nor could he vouch for her.  She also, albeit unintentionally (though certainly to our Enemy’s delight), was directly stopping the proclamation of the gospel.

As always, discernment is required in these matters and after a few minutes of discussion, the woman’s demands were declined and the gospel proclamation was able to begin.

In this sad story of the woman and Paul we also get a glimpse of a small, frightening reality of the gospel, and one’s position without Christ.  On our own, we are unable to stand for our crimes and must bear the full consequence of our sin.  As a result of the woman’s sin (drug abuse) she lost her children (consequence of breaking the law).

Not being able to justify herself in the eyes of the law, she pleaded with Paul to mediate on her behalf.  Paul, who did not know her (nor does he have a relationship with the government) was rightly unwilling to do so.  The woman left, continuing to bear the full weight of the consequence of her sin.

While our brother Paul is certainly not our Lord, nor his rejection as damning, we can hear the frightening echos from our Mediator in Matthew 7:23 to those who claim to be His, but aren't:

I never knew you, depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.

With no one to mediate for them, “workers of lawlessness” will be left to bear the full consequences of their rebellion for eternity.

This is why we go out - to proclaim salvation through Christ Jesus to a dying world with an eternal weight of deserved wrath waiting for them.

As it once was for us.

Come stand with us at 6-8 am most Wednesdays!
Watch for the Tuesday evening text announcement and please RSVP if you are coming, so we know what size of a team to expect.

Abortion Clinic
Mission Hills
03/07/2015

This week Don was joined by men who had traveled to Los Angeles for the Shepherds Conference.

Our good friend Tony Miano, who was used by the Lord to start this particular ministry a couple years ago before turning it over to Don, brought Pastor Chuck O’Neal from Beaverton Oregon along with his son and several others to stand with him and to preach the gospel.

Pastor Chuck, who has a regular ministry at a similar clinic in Oregon, is no stranger to this type of work - what a great encouragement for Don to fellowship with other equally committed believers!

Going to the abortion clinic ranks high on the list of "hard" evangelism in this part of the world where it’s still relatively easy to be a Christian in public.  Unlike witnessing on the street where those who walk by can hide under the general "everybody makes mistakes" justification umbrella, at the abortion clinic you are face-to-face with those who are intentionally, and often all too willingly, on their way to pay to have their baby murdered.

These are pre-scheduled, pre-planned, and pre-meditated killings - we know why they are there, and they know we know why they are there.

So with all pretense of being relatively good gone, and 200 feet between them and “cover” from the clinic, “patients” tempers flare quickly and fiercely.  It often takes a cool head, focused words, and a discerning and direct approach under this type of fire.

Praise the Lord that He has given us men like Don, Tony, and Chuck who stand up boldly on a regular basis to speak for the defenseless!

Missions Conference
03/07/2015
Calvary Bible Church

The week that started with the TMAI Symposium ended with another conference. This one was hosted by the Calvary Mission Leadership Team specifically for the recognition and encouragement of missionaries supported by Calvary. The Evangelism Team was graciously invited to participate again this year, which was humbling for us all, considering the sacrifices being made by other missionaries in impoverished and hostile areas of the world.

This year our team was tasked with putting together the video to kickoff the conference.  Steve handled the editing, while our brother Mark eloquently explained, on camera, the reason we go out - to proclaim the sure hope we have in a risen Savior - and to encourage others to join us.

We will be posting a link to the video as soon as it is available for uploading.

The conference was well attended with a final count of 241.  This conference, held once a year, gives the members of our church body the opportunity to learn about, and fellowship with, local and foreign missionaries supported by our church.

Saturday Outreach
03/14/2015
Burbank

Every Saturday night before descending on downtown Burbank, we gather together in the Police parking lot to pray.

There is nothing that will be said on the box - no argument, no apologetic, no well-planned words - that will “win souls”.  Unless our Lord so chooses to move in the hearers, there will be none saved and no-one will hear what we have to say.  So this part of the evening is as crucial as the outreach, itself, as we praise Him for the opportunity to serve, and ask that His Spirit would give us wisdom in our encounters, and we plead with Him to be merciful in His justice, even as we repent of our own sins and attempts to do it on our own.

Regardless of an evening’s outcome, we always pray that we will honor our Lord in our actions and words, being faithful servants, clinging tightly to the Word as our authority and the actual words of God, inerrant and trustworthy.

We also have the opportunity to thank Him for the people He has brought us. How great is our Lord, who gives us not only the pleasure to be used to proclaim His gospel, but who provides laborers for the harvest!

This week the team was blessed to have first-timer Erin out with us.

Before praying, this week we took a few moments to talk about one team member's suggested “strategy” for what to do when we find ourselves in a long-term discussion with someone who has endless objections.

This type of "defense" is common and is a direct result of man's enmity with God.  It isn't an answer they are looking for, but an excuse to suppress the truth...or at least the one saying it.  It can come in all forms from all kinds of people - from those who consider themselves to be hyper-intelligent to those who believe themselves hyper-spiritual. Sometimes they are disguised in humble sounding words while others are laid bare in self-exaltation.  Unfortunately, the answer to the question of how to handle these all too frequent occurrences isn't always easy.

We must always be careful that such strategies don’t drive or hamper the proclamation of the Gospel. We don't go out to be applauded or for results, but rather to speak of our Savior and our Father's free gift through Him, knowing that through the hearing of His Word some will be called and some will be hardened. Thinking through these types of issues as a group gives us the opportunity to meditate on what the Word says, and to grow together.

Father, let us be found to have proclaimed too much and too boldly and too often of Christ, than to be found guilty of withholding the truth out of worry of wasting “our” time. Help us to find the balance of being faithful yet discerning servants, and grant us the wisdom we need for each conversation, that we might glorify and magnify your Son in our words and actions.

This evening we had five men available to be on the box, so we split off into two groups, straddling the light between Ross and P.F. Chang's.

Given the large size of this night’s team, we also had people handing out tracts at all four corners.

The night began as most, with men on the box and various one-on-one conversations.

As the evening progressed, Mark's preaching caught the attention of one young man.

Seeming at first to only half-care, he engaged with Mark, opening with a question regarding the "three" possible tomb locations (according to his "sources") from which Jesus could have arisen.

Much like we had discussed earlier, this man would have several questions throughout the conversation that really had no point except to be a wall. Mark countered each with Scripture (much to the man's chagrin), bringing him back to the gospel, reminding us all of man's state after we rebelled against God and of our need for a Savior.

What particularly set the man off, first to mocking, then to yelling, was when Mark told him that we were created to glorify God.

Most of what the young man said cannot be repeated, but centered on God being a self-absorbed “jerk” who created us just so He could be glorified.

Mark remained calm as he reasoned with him, which only caused him to become more agitated. He began screaming profanities and people gathered to watch.

Even still, Mark lovingly and consistently brought him back to the Bible, proclaiming the need for a Savior not only to him, but to all who had stopped to stare.  Here was an example of staying close to God’s Word as the source, intentionally not bringing God down low to be cross-examined, but rather lifting Him high on the strength of His Word, alone.

As the man cursed and swore, not just at Mark but at people in the crowd, he declared his own goodness and right-standing before God.

How blind are those that have not been granted eyes to see!

That gave Mark the opportunity in conversations with him both on and off the box to show that what proceeds out of our mouth reveals our true heart’s condition.

In the end the heckler stomped off.  We can only pray that the Lord would use the scriptures Mark shared with him to soften and not further harden his heart.

While we've had angry hecklers before, this one had the whole crowd stirred up, chattering wildly among themselves, and engaging with both the heckler and members on our team. As has been mentioned in previous blogs, these types of encounters give us an opportunity we just don’t have on a “quiet” night.  Getting so many people to stop on a street corner was a welcome opportunity as others were able to hear the gospel. Many conversations happened during and after.

Police! Actually, this time it wasn't because of someone offended by us. A concerned lady in the crowd called 911 after the heckler and another guy in the crowd starting screaming at each other like they were about to fight.  The cop was very friendly, and stayed for no more than a minute.

This man, like several others, took pictures and movies with his camera.

He identified himself as a Jew who supported us from a first amendment standpoint (a common theme being yelled by other such supporters during the heckling).

He said little, but did mention that he had a Christian friend who "already tried to convert him”.  Please pray for him.

Another “after-the-event” one-on-one is of particular joy as our sister had the opportunity to open the Bible with Harley and Luis, and walk them through the gospel.  They listened intently and humbly.  Sharon has asked that we pray for these two men, one of which in particular who seemed to “track” with what she was saying.

Often, after an intense heckler leaves, so do the watchers. But this night people milled around - some staying through two more gospel presentations. Praise the Lord!
